 A baby purple martin. It flew down from the nest, and was resting up to try to fly back.

Shot with a manual Nikkor 180 2.8 ED AI and 11mm ext ring. No filter, hand held.

He was gone when I came back later, so I assume that he flew back home, or off to live his own life with the rest of the big family.

This is so cool. I have never gotten a worthwhile shot of a Purple Martin. They are always just beyond the reach of my equipment.

Great detail on this little one! He doesn't look very downy so he was probably about ready to leave the nest. I often find the just-fledged babies easier to get close to than the more wary adults, regardless of species. This little one looks like he thought maybe you should be doing something more useful, like feeding him ;-)
