I re-edited this based on a suggestion from Barbara. Turned up fill light in Bridge before importing to CS3, then did a shadows/highlights adjustment to bring up the lights. There is a bit of noise (did a small amount of NI) but I am sometimes very surprised to see the latitude on some pictures. This is quite different - has a very different feel to it with this edit, I think.
Much much prefer the original. The darkness gives it a weight and the mystery already established by the partial figure. And a timelessness because of the anonymity.
