I like the way the flower stalk is framed between the green stalks in this shot.
I had forgotten that these plants are called "pickrelweed". The local name for them is "flags" because of their one leaf per stalk design. The places where they usually grow are called "flag ponds," and are a favorite feeding ground for the local deer population.
The much larger variety which grow to about 7 ft tall are locally called "fire flags," and they grow where the muck and water is deeper. They indicate places where you had best not take your swamp buggy if you don't want to spend a lot of time and effort in getting it back from the muck. |
