Challenge: Free Study 2008-02 (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Challenge Entries
Camera: Pentax K100D
Lens: Tamron AF 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Pentax
Location: Death Valley National Park
Date: Feb 17, 2008
Aperture: f/16
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/60

Date Uploaded: Feb 23, 2008

Shot shortly after sunrise. I was out there early with my 14mm, but the light wasn't right for such a wide shot, and I didn't want to follow the herd of tripods over to where the light was just catching the tops of the peaks above Artist's Point. So I hung around a bit longer than most, and when the sun was just fully up caught this shot with my Tamron extended to about 120mm.

Cropped a bit to square, maybe a tad oversharpened for some, but I like the contrast in colors and light between the signature peak below and the Panamint Range across the Valley, with just a bit of the salt flats peaking out in between.

In a free study its probably a mid 5 shot, but I'm hoping it finds some legs and sneaks up into the 6s

I had no problem discerning what it was and sharing your enjoyment of the stark contrast in colors. This could be very subjective (ha!) because I happen to really like rocks and formations and stuff. Your other commenters have provided potential reasons why it didn't score higher. It is a pretty cool shot, though.

What happens for me, when I look at this photo, is that my attention is divided between the foreground and the background. I see an almost pretty painterly effect in the background and then the foreground seems somewhat unnatural to me. But it's cool tho because it looks like melting butter or carmel. I think it would have scored higher if the voter can tell what you really want the focal point of the picture to be.

Feedback per your post in the forums:
A very cool scene. My initial impression was that both the background and foreground are so awesome that my attention is divided. Perhaps zooming in a little more to show the details on the peak would have been a good shot as well.

nice colors. the many different textures, the absence of shadows and the soft focus make it look like an abstract macro.
a slightly lower angle leading to the inclusion of the horizon and a less dominant peak in the foreground might have enhanced this shot
