This is Squeak. We've had her for two years now and she's still very feral. You can't just approach her for something like a photo shoot without her running away although I tried many times. I captured this shot while she was underneath our living room table. Setup was simple. I stuck a flash under the table and faced it up so it would bounce off the table. Naturally I used my 70-200mm lens which gave me good reach while staying as far away from her as possible so she wouldn't run.
Outtake:
Thanks everyone for the kind words. Given the .1 drop this had on the final day I'm surprised it still finished 2nd. I was expecting a lot of other images to have done better so it turns out I was pretty lucky.

Richard, I think you've proven to be the master of cat portraits :-) This is another incredible shot. Very well done, and congratulations on your ribbon!
I would Love to know what the post-processing steps were that you used on this photo. I keep coming back to it and looking at it again. IMO this is better than your photo "18 Years"
Exquisite detail, lovely color, awesome vignette. Simply stunning! Never before has it seemed like a cat was about to jump through my computer screen. Nice work, Richard!
Wow! Just fantastic! How did you get this damn sharpness in the eyes :D I have tried for a year to get such a nice shoot of my cat and I m still searching for a good approach to do this...this is the best cat foto i ve ever seen ;)
(sorry for my bad english, i have learnt it for two years only)
Richard, I'm thrilled that the cats were so well-represented by this stunning entry. (I was worried the dogs would have dominated the front page). I have to say though, "18 Years" is still my favorite!...;-)
yanko you sure do beautifully in cat portraits. I had to look to make sure it wasn't
another portrait of that 18 year old from last year! which was so well done
and also took a nice red ribbon.
That is MY CAT... I was looking for all over the place :/ How did it get there? I was gonna take its picture but since I couldn't find it, I had to use my backup cat :( NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... I want it back (for the next pets challenge)
My favorite cat closeup portait and made my top5 fave list from the challenge. Great job with all aspects of this shot. I have a feeling I've seen this cat before but cant seem to put my finger on who's it is. Good luck, but I don't think you need it ;)
Wow ... this rivals the wonderful images of the big cats we've see on DPC , the intense stare and the amazing sharp quality should put your score up there. 10
You've taken a "common" subject and presented it with incredible intensity. No costumes, pretty scenes or funny situations... just a really compelling portrait and outstanding photography. This HAS to ribbon. 10
8 - I deliberated over this at first, it is good, but my first thoughts were that the eyes were overprocessed to the point that they didn't look natural, that coupled with the few similar images I've seen on DPC, although that really doesn't matter. There is something slightly unnatural in the eyes, but could be that this is shot in a studio, not sure, but - other than perhaps a suggestion of the lighting at the top similar to that as what appears to be at the bottom, this is a very good image and a very nice pet portrait, and yes, shows off the 'plain old tabby cat''s features well.
oh gosh, how adorable is your model. his calm composure and elegant pose, whilst still looking interesting and have emotion in the eyes is outstanding. Oh and the photographer is pretty good too 9
