Experimenting with near dark photography, as well as shooting in RAW. there was alot less light than it appears in this 30 second exposure. Many of the shots from this session were unusable due to difficulty focusing in the low light. Auto focus was useless. I just had to manual focus in the neighborhood and see what I got. I may bring a flashlight next time as a focusing aid.
Maybe that will help in some situations and I'll keep it in mind, though I don't think it would have helped here. It was in reality almost pitch black. The 30 second exposure makes it look brighter than it really was. Thanks.
To help focus, aim your camera at something really bright and far away, like the moon or in this photo the lights on the horizon. Once focused put it it in manual focus and you don't touch it and you will pretty sharp images, Thats how I do all mine, especially if you shoot on the wide end at 18mm. HOpe that helps. :)
The stars look odd for a reason. Most of them are not stars. One of my flickr contacts suggested that it might be hot spots on my sensor from the extremely long exposure of 30 seconds.
that's a beautiful scene. i like the reflections in the distance. i'm not sure about the stars. they look a little odd. i think your exposure is perfect.
