B&W would do wonders to this image. Some clone out in the fingernails would clear that distracting red noise (Ops! for a moment I forgot this is Basic Editing!). Anyway a great shot full of meaning

This is a nice photograph that creates a good diagoanl line but whatever the colored stuff on the kids nails is distracting and adds unwanted color to the picture.
Very, very nice composition. I really the like the diagonal orientation. I would like to see the white fingers more in focus, especially the index finger.
Sometimes keeping it simple is the best. Very nicely done. I like how you not only took the black and white approach, but also the young and old(er) approach. Very well executed. Nice use of space, great sharpness, nice lighting.
The skin tones appear overly red to me - I'd look at Selective colour Red and play around with the Black - or even Hue/Saturation Red. That's if you use photoshop.
