This is a portrait of a chimp I affectionately call 'Grandma'. She was captured in the wild and has been at the local zoo for longer than I have been alive. This may be a sad thought, but she lives in a HUGE habitant with her family of 6 children and their siblings and has likely survived longer than she would have in the wild.
I personally believe that animal portraits are portraits, which is why I entered this shot. It tells a story, it has character, and captures her personality well. I am sure some people will vote this down and declare it off topic.

Hey mood! Grandma was an excellent subject and I was very happy to see her in the portrait challenge. Refreshing stuff. The texture on the facial wrinkles, the lighting, dof... all great. Going in my favorites.
This is such a beautiful and emotional shot. Incredible contrast really helps with the mood. Lighting is excellent. I like how it goes from dark to light making your eyes scan the scene from left to right.
One of three tens i felt compelled to give in this weeks challenge. Expression, composure, lighting, focus, DOF (?), everything is totally right. I wish you could give just one picture a week an 11, for this would be it. as it is, 10.
I love this shot. A very sensitive portrait. I predict a top-ten finish. I think the only things i would change are to crop the black bar from right side and carefully clone out the fibrous-looking thigy (plant stem?) at lower right. Very nice work, good luck!
If this isn't a Moodville picture then you should be proud that you made one worthy of her. this picture actually makes me sad to look at. I have no idea what she's thinking, but it tugs my heart either way. fabulous tones. the shallow depth really highlights her expression. love it.

Lovely lighting and wonderful expression. I like the inclusion of the fencing infront of him for it's pattern and provision of compositional balance and also for the way it places him in his environment. A really beautiful portrait.
PS I just read a marvellous book called A Primate's Memoirs by Robert Sapolsky which is about baboons not chimps and sounds deathly dull but is actually a very touching story. You might enjoy it.
My number one favorite for this challenge. I love these guys. I'm glad someone took a risk and captured a portrait of a best instead of a human. I like how you captured his inprisonment in the expression and his hand on the bar. Good luck with this one. I'm sure you'll do very well. Great lighting and composition as well.
There are some great portraits in this challenge. Even though I have given several tens this week, I think this is my overall favorite. I think you captured a perfect moment with this photograph. This chip seems to be sad, and having the fence visible in this shot really supports that theme with a lot of strength. - Best of show
Wonderful shot. Love his look. Lighting could of been a bit better, but I understand you don't have control here. He's something, and this is a good shot. Good luck.
