Meet Tabico - she's my foster kitty for the next six months while her "mom" is deployed to Afghanistan. Her mom was the one who watched my kids while I was deployed so it's nice to be able to return the favor! She's on the chair looking through the metal slats of the back. She's not really jailed, though she does stay in her room since she really, really doesn't like Sir Thomas...
Shot with the lens I just took out of the box, handheld, in existing (very poor) light, at something like ISO 800 (or 1600 - I forgot to check before I came over to borrow the neighbor's internet and load the thing.) Tabico does not like to sit still for pictures. And yes, I have one or two with the eyes in focus, but for some reason I really like this one with her nose in focus and the eyes not.
Post challenge: OK, so that didn't work well. Note to self - expected point of focus is better than unexpected point of focus. :-) Does what I was trying to do work better in B&W? (Does for me, but that's beside the point.)
And with the eyes in focus:

So yes, a cat's eyes are incredibly detailed and interesting and definitely worthy of focus, but so is the fur pattern on a cat's nose!! I love this image, the framing is excellent with so much depth, the cat's expression is wonderful (like, how dare you enclose me!), and the detail in the focal point of the image, the NOSE, is excellent! IMO, it is perfect as is :-)
What a beautiful way to capture an otherwise average subject! Colors and technicals are goog, but I would have liked to see the left cripped more. Nice photo! I give a 6.
I have to say that I am not really a cat person, but I did like this shot, simply for the incredible colour and hairfine (literally) sharpness along Tabico's nose, which menat that the viewer could almost 'feel' the picture
Wonderful textures and a nice take on the challenge
I love, love, love , the focus on the nose- every kitty shot I see makes me practically weep for my lost Max- & hubby is not "ready " for another yet... Thanx, Deb.
I actually am kind of with you on the nose being in focus part. It makes it look like she is poking her nose right out of your computer at you :)
Lately, I have been so bored with "rule" pictures and have wanted to daringly do things that just don't follow all the rigid rules. For me. . .this works!
Wow. Seldom have I seen such unanimity in comments (the focus). I probably would've said the same thing. :) Actually, I would've suggested using a smaller aperture if possible and get her whole face sharp.
Not sure if you made the right choice in bringing the nose in sharp instead of the eyes...??? Can't tell without seeing the difference. The detail is certainly there in your selected subject. I do like the light feel of this photo with the abundance of white. The framing works well also. Best of luck to you in the challenge.
I like the thought (and the very cute kitty), though the fact that the eye is out of focus while the nose is in focus detracts a bit, a wider depth of field would have helped. Though I think the foreground and background (collar) look best out of focus.
awwww. For a shot like this, you just need to move the focus back slightly on to its eyes. Buts as cats are notoriously unco-coperative, I'll let you off
