three days in a row i tried to photograph one of these dragonflies for the yellow challenge .. they are fairly common on the firetrail where i walk .. i think its an australian emerald dragonfly and the photograph i entered came from the third day .. i've kept the dragonfly's natural colours only intensfied them ..
this is the original photograph unprocessed ...
from the first day i had three possible processes from the same photograph, but i wasnt happy with the stick being out of focus with the extreme crop and with uncropped version i didnt think it had as much impact as the one i decided to enter ..
on the second day i was able to photograph a dragonfly actually eating a fly .. it was amazing .. the fly was nearly bigger than the dragonfly's head .. i wasnt happy with the process because it was too grainy & i'd lost detail in the shadows because i was shooting into the sun ..
also it might'v grossed some ppl out !!
after voting .. this is INSANE .. !! i was thinking i might be getting a 6th or 7th from the score, so imagine my shock to see this with a ribbon .. AND BLUE .. !!!!
personally i dont think its the best in the challenge so this time the voters have erred in my favour . !!
thankyou everyone for your votes and comments .. :):)xx

Blimey Roz....Sorry it has taken me so long to comment on this photo (I have been working away) but let me say congratulations!!!! Not on the fact that you got your second highest score, or on the fact that you got your first ever blue ribbon - these are great in themselves - but my congratulations are for the fact that you have produced a picture of such jaw dropping brilliance that it could be shown anywhere in the world and alongside the work of any photographer in the world and it would not look out of place
Stunning.....simply stunning and it could not have happened to a nicer person
Well done Rozzy, I knew it was just a matter of time before you got the BLUE. Great shot to boot. Focus is in the right places. Your processing is fantastic, nice colours and tones. Well done mate.
Roz!! WOO HOOO! What a fanTASTIC photo! Oh yes it does deserve blue! Dang, your macro shots just keep getting better and better. CONGRATULATIONS. I am so happy this won blue.
OMG OMG!!! You insane woman - you did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is outstanding! I am SO happy for you and very proud. They say that dragonflies are good luck - well this one really was... though luck had not much to do with it. You are such an exceptional photographer and this ribbon is a tribute to that!
Immense congratulations Rozy on your first of many 'Blues'.
It's well deserved and overdue, I must say! I bet Katee is sitting in the corner though licking her wounds.
Yay Roz!! Congrats on the blue and for showing me what patience and a nifty lens can do. Excellent work! (Of course, now I must go chase down dragonflies, which ain't gonna be easy here, since I scraped ice off the windshield this morning... but at least I did go get the lens.)
AHHHHHHHHHHHH * twirls around doing the happy dance * I am so happy to log on and see your name under a blue. You are an incredible woman and photographer and though virtual ribbons dont meran everything it sure is nice way to recognise your talent :) :) :)
Wow, fantastic shots! Did you find that using a 100mm macro enabled you to take the shot versus something with a shorter focal length? I have a 60mm macro for my XT and I find that insects tend to skit away when I attempt to photograph them. Handheld or tripod?
Tops to Roz!!! Ya got a blue!!! Very proud you should be, very proud. Congrats my friend, well done and very well deserved!!! You found an awesome way to use that 100mm..
OMG!!! Congratulations big time! I love this image...you certainly deserve the blue ribbon for this beauty! This is awesome Roz, I'm so happy for you!!
i'm not even going to try and put into words how happy/proud i am for you, you already know! HUGE congrats and hugs and high fives and "WOO HOOS!" from across the pond!
man i had to come back and edit this cuz i am just SO HAPPY for you, you always take the comments and votes to heart and i just love to see this validation of what i already considered your excellent work!
first and second place are both Aussies?! i smell a conspiracy!
houch!!! what sharpness and details, great colours even if i think that the blue on the legs isn't real, lens, postwork? I don't know but I have some suspect on that colour :) 9
oh wow...excellent macro...lighting is good. It's a pity the flash leaves such a distracting catchlightnin the eyes. I have done this kind of image before and wish there was another way...8
