Cell phones have truly invaded everywhere. When I called the rink to ask whether I was allowed to take pics, she said sure, just not on the ice. It never occurred to me anyone would try to take photos while skating. But apparently people do think cell phones are reasonable.
I was deliberately trying to isolate someone for this shot, and I tried various combinations of shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. I finally hit on this one, which gave me a sharp image of people who weren't moving and a blurred image of people who were skating, without completely losing their shapes.
Editing was the usual: WB adjustment and some contrast in the RAW converter, followed by sharpening, more contrast, and finally an acid treatment using the "urban acid" action found at Action Central.

I didn't vote in this challenge so this is the first time i am seeing this one. Let me say that this is a very creative take on the challenge. Great idea.
I probably would have scored this an 8 (sorry I didn't vote). I like the processing and I really like the composition. Has a fun feel to it - and I am digging the blur.
Not sure what I can say to improve it any. I don't see this image as being an attempt to appease the general DPC voter. I see this as being a complete image and if the voters didn't like it then their loss. So who am I to say what to change (and I wouldnt change a thing).
I did not vote in this challenge but I would have scored this high. Although, I would not have made the connection with the cell phone lol. My initial reaction was based on the guy being in focus while everyone else is a blur. But what you have written is pretty spot on.
Like this idea, isolated due to focused in contrast to unfocused areas. My problem is that my eyes are first drawn to the 3 skaters on the left and only then to the man on the right.
