A tribute to all of the match pics that have scored well in the past - gaurawa, jadedyouth, and kiwiness are the three that come to mind.
I have never done a shot like this. This entry is a combination of trying something I had never done before and wanting to get a decent score as I have three mid to low 5s on my update page right now. Pandering to the DPC voter. Hopefully it works out for me.
This was the first capture of nearly 50 attempts. I tried matches at different angles, matches stacked single, double and triple, and waiting for different times in the burn. This was the cleanest of the bunch. The match is sticking out of some floral foam, black velvet backdrop (only lit that on fire once) and the 420ex bounced off a silver umbrella to the left. Overall much easier than I expected. The flash made all the difference.
PP - RAW conversion, several selective color adjustments to tweak the smoke color, heavy NI several times on the blue channel and one normal on the whole pic, USM, resize, more NI, USM, border and another NI.

Hey! This is the first I've seen of this. nicely done. funny thing is that it was the first capture. that's how it always works for me too. spend hours trying tons of different things and the best one is the first one. lol. great job! Gotta fav it!
Congratulations on your Blue Ribbon! Excellent colors with no "blow-outs" in a subject that invariably creates them! Tip-of-the-Hat to someone with great skill from someone who hopes to learn them! Blessings! :)
Excellent capture Tim, Love the way the smoke bellows up to the center of the frame the composition and the added frame really make this one stand out above all the others in the challenge.
My favourite in the challenge so far. A thoughtout idea with an artistic merit. I especially like the abstract feel to the image, the attention paied to detail and subtle line flow... A very good composition and execution. Bravo!
Very clean photograph. Good use of the dark background to the orange of the flame. Nice sharp image all around. The blue frame works very well with the blue of the smoke.
head of match looks oversharpened, match has a greenish cast. other than that very well done, like how the border repeats the thin blue lines of the smoke
