I wanted to capture the look of peace and inner joy that I saw on the face of the woman as she held the candle. It seemed in total contrast to the hyped-up commercialism that now goes with the Christmas season. I didn't want to distract her or anyone around her so I used only the available light. I thought the stained glass of the praying hands added to the picture. I would have liked to have caught her 3/4 face, and eliminated the polka dot blouse on the left, but that would have caused distraction and spoiled the moment.

It is easy to agree that calm spots tend to be hidden and hard to find in big cities. I wonder if this would be stronger if taken from a little higher camera position, maybe also moving over to the left a little to show more of the second woman's face and less of the bright window, which distracts from the peaceful light of the candles.
The tiny size is going to cost you points. Also the composition with a face growing out of the blonde woman's chin. If this is your first challenge don't get discouraged. A few minor improvements and it would be very good.
I'm afraid this just looks like a snapshot, though it is a decent one. It's also severely cropped. You should use every bit of the 640 pixels allowed, at least in one direction.
A great idea - I imagine calm is not something you see everyday in L.A.! People may already be telling you this but, just in case they are not, your image is sized very small and we can't see any detail. Please let me know if you have questions - I think there is a great tutorial on this site somewhere that explains how to size for the site. Good luck with your pic.
Nice Photo, but it saved as a very small jpeg. I had this same problem when I started two years ago. If you simply learn about the step called "Save for Web", especially in PhotoShop, then you can save a beautiful photo with one side being at the 640 pixel mark. Tutorial About "Saving for Web"Thread About "S4W" Hope these help...I'm just sharing the same kind of help that I was given when I was a Newbie. Much Success to you...and...You're Welcome! :)
OK I appreciate that I will be probably about the 400th person to tell you this, but....its just too small to fully appreciate. A real shame as it looks as if it could have been a really apposite shot in the challenge
