This is Sara again. She is an awesome model and roommate but I wanted to do a shot in which she wouldn't be recognized as much. I got this idea after staring at the flowers I got after a performance and thinking, awesome, i have flowers now....so I have to take a picture with them....The face painting was loosly inspired by Larus's photo "Cross". I wanted it to look like the flower was bursting out of the white stripe. When I was messing with this in photoshop I did not like the color look, it wasn't working out well and the skintone looked funny. When I went to convert it to black and white I used the black and white adjustment layer and turned the "red" filter all the way down and was stunned because she looked like the rest of her skin was painted black. I loved it, but it was pretty blotchy so I used some other adjustment layers to smooth it out and airbrushed a little. For the paint I used scotch tape to make straight lines and then neatened it up in photoshop.
I hope this goes over well with dpc, because I really like this image.

Breathtaking! I just found your portfolio and I am absolutely stunned. You surely have a bright future in photography. To say you are talented is an understatement.
WOW!! I just have to say I picked this image to make a comment on your work in general or I'd be here for hours. Amazingly talented young woman. 19??? wow you're brilliant a very bright future and a very beautiful young woman.
I like it so much, I'm going to put this in a test for my kids english class. woo. You are going to be famous with a small group of kids on the other side of the world! :)
I have come back to look at this several times and have finally decided I like it :) The composition / subject is just so odd, that it took me awhile to appreciate it. I just really like the black and whites, the lighting and the way she is looking straight into the camera. It may not be totally to my tastes, but it certainly carries an impact. Congrats!
This is so amazingly creative. Whoever gave you a 1 is nuts! Those tens are highly deserved and you would have had one more from me if I had voted in this challenge. Really wonderful work on so many levels.
Wow, this is just great on so many aspects, especially since weird impressionism portraits like this always contribute to the wow factor. I love it's trippy vibe and lighting is perfect on both the black and white stripes.
Should have placed First in my opinion. I did not vote in this challenge but when I scanned the photos I saw this one and my first thought was it will get blue.
wow congrats! great shot! don't worry about the 1s and 2s, I really doubt they voted you as such for legitimate reasons... esp given the fact that you have no 3s...
Congrats on the ribbon Claire! Well done and well deserved!
Just thinking about what might have helped it score a little higher... I'm thinking that maybe a little more detail in the whites (the nose and flower details). Not a lot, or it would spoil the effect. But just enough to give the viewer a little more to hang onto.
lovethelight said:"ps. I was wondering if the people who gave me 1s and 2s could tell me what it is they didn't like about it, because I have gotten a lot of positive feedback on this but would like to hear some negative feedback"
Your photo is technically good; but as you may appreciate, sometimes mere taste is a decisive factor in weighing a photos score; in a photo such as yours 1,2,3,4 even 5 represent the same attitude towards this type of photography. This does not necessarily reflect my exact opinion on such photos, but it is a response I felt you are entitled to.
Now this is truly fabulous. Great work, Claire! I agree with Tanja on the givers of 1's and 2's.
Congratulation on your ribbon and a very fine piece of work.
This is cutting-edge photography, worthy of a really trendy fashion magazine (I guess, not being into really trendy fashion magazines myself). ;-)
Congratulations on the Ribbon.
whoa so powerfull. the make-up and the flower makes a great effect. the black/white effect with the cross and the background is excellent. a ribbon winner for sure. looks like a larus' (like a negative picture of "cross") but in any case a great portrait.
The contrast at the bottom of the frame is great. Since you have great backlighting I think this would have worked much better with a black background.
no vote since I know who you are d= very artistic and pretty. although I'd like to see more details of her skin. I like the reflection of you in her eyes.
