taken in Natchaug State Forest, the same location as for my Distance entry. I tried to capture the absolute beauty of a New England Fall. Luckily, the day was rainy. It made for yucky skies, but it made all the colors pop (with a polarizer filter). I used the Orton effect here hoping to add to the mood. I tried to go big here, let's see if it works.
PP - opened Raw in ACR, adjusting blacks, saturation, clarity and luminance. crop. a little burning on the rocks in the stream. clone out a little of the leaves on bottom left of frame. duplicate layers (one in screen blending mode). merge top layer down, then duplicate layer again, this time adding gaussian blur in multiply mode. soft light layer to darken a little of the foliage, especially the yellows. flatten, resize, added border.

Steve - Well, I think it was a bold choice to enter an on purpose soft focus image in a free study and you seem to have scored pretty well. My guess is that the saturation (as others commented on) just overwhelmed people. I think you have a great image for a print here - the colors and softness will really translate well to the printed media.
