Gordon, this was one of the first challenges I saw when I joined as a full member and it almost made me ask for my money back! Its been in my favourites for a while, I must have forgotten to comment.
Rather than being daunted by it, I now aspire to similar greatness but not sure I'll live long enough. Whilst I doubt getting the image like this was simple, thats what it conveys and makes it a stronger image.
A big thank you to everyone who voted and commented.
Quite surprised (but delighted)by the level of success..especially as I was in two minds about submitting this image.
I will post a message later today which will show the original image and the two alternatives that I pondered over.
There have been some enquiries as to how much manipulation went into the shot and my post should confirm that there was very little work needed. I was helped by the perfect conditions and the vantage point which allowed me to crop out the horizon..thus helping create the effect.
Believe me ..it would have to be simple..my prowess at post processing is extremely limited. In fact it would not surprise me if I have done something while downloading this image from my camera which has upset the EXIF....wouldn`t be the first time :-)
Fingers crossed and thanks again to all.
Profoundly good work Gordon: 12 challenges in and then the 15th hoiighest rated shot on the site - bordering on the unfair :-) Very pleased for you - was going to say keep it up, but perhaps I'd rather the rest of us were left with a chance. Intriguing that all your 'averages' are whole numbers, too.
The negative space works very well here. With the slight haze and the great reflections off the water, everything blends together so there is no real horizon, which is a nice effect. Nice work. - 9
Your title certainly matches what the image conveys - floating peacefully on the tranquil waters... Good choice to go for black and white to really highlight the cloudy shadows in the still water.
I'd be surprised (at this point anyway) if this photo isn't in the ribbons, or at least in the top 10. This is the most compelling photo I've seen for this challenge. This is remarkably well done. Awesome work. If it were my photo, I'd have chopped a little off the left and off the bottom to bring the boat slightly more toward the center and slightly closer. Good Luck. I think you'll do well. But I've been wrong before 9
The smoothnes of the water makes it look like the boat is actually in the clouds and floating in the sky. The soft contrast gives a heavenly appearance. "10"
I love the way this boat seems to float in space. It's almost hard to tell if the boat is floating on air or water and it gives the photo a very etheral and surreal feel. Very well done.
Nice composition, though I'd suggest playing around with levels to get a better tonal range. There's just not very much black there, but by adding a levels adjustment layer and pulling the left hand input slider toward the right you could 'introduce' some.
Greetings... this is one of the best photos I have seen here recently. It is definitely a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the photos in this challenge. I like the peaceful feeling... - best of show :)
That is perfect. I'd sure like to know how you achieved this. The sky endlessly meeting the water make them look as one element but there are two. outstanding

This is a very nice composition and an effective use of advanced editing rules but perhapos not quite elemental enough since the water has lost its defining qualities and become a bit too abstract perhaps?
