 I think this is good light, the sun was setting and this beam of light was right on this statue and the trees were in the shade and not made of granite so it wasn't as bright and reflective. To get the exposure right on the statue I put the camera inches from body so the frame was filled with the light coming off of it and locked the exposure. This gave me no blown highlights and naturally darkened the sky.
Also shot with a circular polarizer.

This was shot about a minute before this shot which was into the light.

Love the contrast of the statue with the dark trees and sky. What's cool about this is that your description gave me a better understanding about how the camera would naturally darken the sky. That happened to me today and I was wondering about it. Now you say there are no blown highlights, but on my screen it seems to me that detail is lost in part of the hands and the shoulders. Not being critical, trust me lol, just trying to see if I do not understand the terminology or if it's my monitor.

This is one of my favorite times of day to shoot, particularly in the Spring and Fall...the light seems to have so much more character and drama. It can make the most mundane of things look magnificent...nice shot.

Good catch. Wonderful use of filtered light come in and hitting the subject. Terrific idea with the polarizer. I need to invest in one myself.

Wow, I wouldn't expect to find such contrast (bright statue to darker background) in the sunlight. Very nice!
