This is all camera based ... the shallow DOF was not photoshopped in. I used my Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro set @ F2.8, manual focus, miror lock up and remote cable release. Placed the cork screw by a window so I could deal with natural light. Layered background created by the window casing. Cropped out maybe 20%. Converted to grayscale, then colored sepia. Resized, then applied two "Sharpen".
One of very few none baby pics I'v taken in a long time. lol. Refreshing.

This is what I thought was shallow DOF. I really felt this was going to make a ribbon. I'm surprised and confused it didn't even make it to the top 10. If I could vote on members challenges this would have been a 10
Excellent shot - great composition and tonal range. I sort of wish that the corkscrew came to a very sharp point that was highlighted by the depth of field - it appears to be a bit blunt, but overall very creative composition and perfect exposure.
Oddly simple and interesting. Love the choice of coloration, and the dof is perfect for this shot and subject. The composition is unexpectedly appealing to me - Definitely a wall hanger here. Not so impactful as to knock me out, but definitely worth a 9.
Exceptional image. It is a great concept for this challenge for only a tiny fraction of the image to be in focus and the tip of the corkscrew is perfect for this purpose.
I really like this! Good diagonal composition, the focus tip is on the third, the tone is great, and the border is mimimal but effective. There is more OOF than focus and my eyes do dwell a little on the curls but I dont really see that as a bad thing.
Just larking about. A beautiful shot - nice idea too. Some photo libraries would probably snap this up. Well composed, although I'm sure this was just a fluke, lucky snapshot with no effort involved.
; )
PERFECT shallow DOF. This has amazing clarity on the subject and the perfect DOF, lighttng and composition. ALL well thought out. Congrats on a amazing photo !
Exytaordinarily un-sharp, when seen so close. I like the graphical element to this image - the contrasting weight of the curves and the straight line in the background. DOF is obviously correct, perhaps even too extreme, or at least maybe too sudden - the fringe of field seems very abrupt to me.
Oooooh! Love this! Just wonderfully wonderfully representative of shallow DOF and also a fantastically composed and balanced image. The tip of that screw seems rather oversharpened but I think that actually it might just be that there is a lot of detailed pattern reflected in the surface there rather than smooth colour. I really like this one a lot, and were I someone who felt it worthwhile paying for postage from DPC Prints I'd buy this one.
