I went to Audubon Mill Park to take the photo of John James Audubon & his Pelican statue. While I was setting up the shot, my wife, two girls, and our little yorkie - shih tzu mix were walking along the sidewalk along Audubon Mill Park overlooking the mighty Ohio River. When I saw them, a light clicked and I knew what I had to shoot. It was not planned, but I think it worked out great.
I cropped, straightened, adjusted fill light, and submitted for your approval.... :)
The fence is an overlook with a steep drop off and the sign tells about John James Audubon and the Mill that he operated in Henderson. I thought about cropping them out, but I wanted the width and a place for the people to walk to. Hope it doesn't hurt me too much.
I also didn't want to crop the top to much because of the heart shape above the pelican's head.

Yes, the pelican is a statue modeled after a John James Audubon painting. I was about 3 feet from the statue and 30 feet from the sidewalk that my family was walking on. I thought about cropping out the pelican, but it was by definition, a "silhouette". Then I looked above it's head and the tree branches formed a heart shape. I knew it probably would be picked on by some, but I still love the shot. Maybe too busy, but a "silhouette".
I have several other photos that I took for this competiton that might have scored higher, but the lighting on the tree and the family was too good not to share.
I love the confusion of scale. This gets more fascinating the longer I look at it. Probably just a statue of a bird, huh? too bad. This seemingly haphazard composition holds together very well.
I like the idea of this. If it were mine, I'd crop to the left of the lamp post and to the right of the tree trunk, creating more of a vignette and not so many busy shapes. Does that make sense? As it is, there is no place for the eye to rest and it seems a bit cluttered. I wish the silhouettes were a touch more crisp.
The pelican (a statue?) throws it off for me. It's nicely framed, but turns the photo into a cross between a nursery rhyme and a Japanese horror movie. Too bad, because otherwise this shot is beautiful.
