 Does anyone know why this image is much sharper, but when I reized it it gets out of focus? Granted, I added and changed the font for it to work for a cross-stitch pattern so it doesn't look exactly the same, but sharpenss should be the same...right?

If you do a USM on Photoshop (Unsharp Mask) it gets better.
Check out this tutorial, particularly on the section "Sharpen for Web". If can play with the percentage, radius, threshold to get a feel for it. Depending on the image I change these parameters accordingly.
