 My second try was some better...Okay, on this one, I used Selective Colors a lot before going to Black and White (CS3) to minimize the blue and still retain as much as possible of the darker wires, etc. Then selected reasonably carefully the wires, etc. (in batches) and used levels to bring out the black. Again used Smart Sharpening and the result is, I think, better. Not perfect, but better.

Great eye to see all that! Thanks for sharing your technique. I think I use a similar technique with a fair number of b&w conversions. I usually just work with levels and curves, but I will do my first levels and curves as normal, flatten the image, and then go back and do a second curve fooling around and exaggerating the channels as if I was "cross processing". When I have what I want, I flatten again, and then go into b&w.

A lot better than A, I agree but what a tough PP job to bring back details in such a shot. It's a great subject and - call me lazy if you want - I'd just go back on an overcast day to shoot this against a white sky. That being said, if you had not posted the whole story, I would not have known, so I guess youc an say you did a good job!
