The concept for this image is likely the result of reading an article in the National Geographic about our planet's shortage of clean water. The full glass will soon run over, which represents excess consumption of the worlds resources by wealthy nations. Technically, the most difficult part of the setup was lighting the watch. It has a gold cover that reflects onto the face causing an uneven yellow cast, which is partly why I desaturated the image (though I think it works well with this theme). I used a micro softbox as close as possible to minimize reflections off the watch face. The glass was lit with a single 45" umbrella. The resulting image was desaturated by 90% and sharpened.

really cool. you did a good job of capturing the glass on the black background. something I have yet to do nicely. use of neg. space is clear, and used well. I like the composition, and even without the title, this photo stands nicely on it's own. Great job. good luck in the challenge. ~hbunch7187~
I like the clarity of detail in both objects very much but am not convinced about their positioning. With so much black space they seem to me to be slightly too marginalised in the overall frame. 6, Kavey
This is a beautiful image...technically awesome photo. I'm not quite sure what the message of it is though...look forward to hearing about it after the challenge. 9 Lisa
Running out of water, or of time? This is a cool shot. I still haven't figured out how you all do a black background like this. It works in this shot. I like the water trickle going into the glass. 7
I also think just the glass without the watch would be effective. Very elegant looking. Nice focus. I think a neat thing to do (outside of DPC) would be to have it all greyscale except for lime/lemon and have it really brilliant. Good lighting and focus. karmat
This is quite nice... I have looked at this photo several times.. There is a quirck about it that I coulnd't figure out until now. First of all, the negative space concept here works very well. The issue that is causing me problems is that the watch and the glass are each competing for attention and they are at opposite corners of the frame... This accents the 'negative space' concept for me, but it keeps me from being able to see the composition without having to move to each individual component... does that make any sense at all?? = 8 - jmsetzler
The competing subject make this feel very off balance, and counter what I think negative space is about. Instead of emphasising the subject, you have competing subjects.
Great neg spc, focus is terrific. In all honesty, I think I would have preferred a shot of the glass alone. The use of both objects gives me a kind of "time and space" feel, but the amount of neg spc between them makes the objects feel completely unrelated, and for me, that kind of throws me off. lhall-7
