This shot shows how, in the deep shadows of an image, both dynamic range (black-to-red-to-yellow banding) and noise become an issue.
1) By increasing the shutter time at a constant ISO, both noise and dynamic range are improved.
2) By increasing ISO, dynamic range is improved (no banding), but noise is still a problem.
The relative amounts of noise in the shots cannot be compared, but the point is: increasing ISO boosts levels AND noise. Increasing shutter boosts levels without noise.
great examples jeff, helps the noobs understand it a bit better, i just recently tried to explain to someone this same thing and would have helped if i had seen this before so i could have used it as a reference.
