Post challenge:
My very first challenge submission. Thank you very much for the comments and the votes.
To answer some of your questions:
- Yes, this is Notre-Dame, the famous cathedral in Paris.
- Yes, I did use a tripod.
- The couple is very small in the picture, I know. I would have loved to show them bigger, but that wasn't possible without changing the entire composition. And it was all about the combination of cathedral and river bank. And it was the Urban Landscapes challenge, after all. ;)
- About the passing boats with the floodlights: I made sure they were as far away as possible when I took the picture. I don't understand why they have all those lights. The river bank is so beautiful in the evening; I find the light very "romantic". These floodlights destroy everything. And when you're sitting at the river having a picnic, nothing is more annoying than boats passing every few minutes, shining floodlights at you and yelling incomprehensible words through loudspeakers so that you feel like a prisoner on the escape. This is what the scene looks like with one of those boats:
Not nice. ;)
A cleaned-up version (I removed the trash can) is available as print.

Dang! I almost missed the couple by the waterfront. That really changes the context of this photo. Nice job seeing that and bringing it into the image to add a sense of scale. Good work controlling the exposure on those lights as well. Good luck in the challenge.
