I'd planned on doing a coffee/milk photo session the weekend the speed challenge was announced. I didn't want to enter another coffee/milk splash so I tried to get a different look by using coffee and milk but using food colouring to give the coffee a more murky look and the milk a more chocolatey look. I hope the voters still like this type of shot....worrying...;-)
Post Challenge
Oh WOW, brilliant! This is such an honour. To get a high placing in a Free Study is like a dream come true to me. AND being in the top three with my friend SandyP… THANKS for the votes and the comments!
I’ve been a complete wreck this week watching the scores come in…

Oh wow, awesome! I spent 4 evenings trying to get something like this, but failed...how do you get this umbrella shape? I'm guessing that's some sort of a home-made / improvised tap, that drips the drops (lol!) at a rate such that when one drop hits the water and bounces, the second drop hits the bounced first drop? (err..if that makes sense)...
Needless to say I've been on a quest for about a month to reproduce something like this....
Nevermind the naysayers. This photograph is beautiful and masterfully captured. So what if it's subject matter that's been done before? Here's a news flash... everything's been done! Congratulations on your ribbon, it is well deserved.
Congratulations on this yummy looking shot :)
The food coloring, color, of choice is perfect. I like that it's not green, red or blue. The shape of this splash would really look great in glass as a coffee table design.
I love your work, Irene, and each of your drops is glimpse into a world we could not ever see unless you bring it to us. This shot brings another level of artistic genius and beauty. They almost seem alive! I love the shadows on this one! Fabulous!
I have been noticing that your "drop" photos have been taken at 1/500 sec. I know you use flash and according to specs, you can't go faster than 1/500 while using your flash.
Did you know that there is a way to use higher than 1/500 speed while using your flash? I think you may like to experiment with 1/1000 or 1/2000 speed to get even better "drop" shots!
Check out the shot below. It was done with my D70 and SB800 at 1/2000 sec.
PM me and I'll give you the simple info on how to work it out.
Don't get me wrong this is a awesome shot. It is crisp, the colors are amazing in short it is a really good shot. but how many times can you win a ribbon with the same shot? Are people that amazed by the same thing that its a surefire thing? Have you tried other things like sand hitting glass, water from a water gun, or anything else>? You have a great talent for these macro stop motions I personally would like to see some diffrent things. Don't get trapped doing the same thing over and over because its a automatic good score...Just some thoughts......congrats on the ribbon
From your point of view you are, no doubt, right.
From my point of view it’s a different ball-game. This type of high speed photography has become a passion to me. It’s an extremely difficult type of image to get which probably accounts for some of the huge interest, especially with people who have tried this sort of thing. No two images are the same – they may look similar – but they’re not the same. For me, this is another fascinating aspect of the work I put into it. And I’m still learning. When I look at the first splash shots I did two years ago I find that I’m now getting better results. Definitely better focus, better DOF. I’m improving. This is also one of the reasons I show them here, any criticism, any comments are always a help.
One thing I’ve learned here is that no image is a surefire thing. No image automatically gets a good score. This is fine with me – I take what I get and learn from it.

Now this is a very good idea/suggestion Irene, and I think a great thing for you to consider doing a tutorial, on your magical droplets, as you do them so well.
You are definately the "Queen of the Droplets", thats for sure.

Wow, you just keep dropping in on them ribbons with your dropped shots. Is this your 4th ribbonmaker out of drops. Where can I see the Drops Gallery on tour?
Oh dear your these shots just keep getting better and better. What an amazing catch. Clarity and sharpness with DOF are out of this world. Congrats on an amazing shot Irene! Well deserved ribbon.
I would love to see a "How'd they do that?" done on these types of photos. I've tried and failed many a time. I love this shot. Never goes out of style!
I love this Irene, and so pleased it ribboned for you.
Actually you are just awesome at these type of images.
Excellent in fact, and you so deserve this win.....
Just incredible.
Can stare at this for minutes.
Different angle to the shots it was no-doubt inspired by, but it has a sharper edge to it.
I prefer this shot. I think you've improved a tried and tested experiment.
Not easy to do, but it's brilliant.
Yep. Another image of a droplet. Technically strong, but an extreme lack of creativity.
ETA: Sorry for the jackass comment a few months back. It really is a great shot, and you have proven me well wrong in even entertaining the thought that maybe this was the only shots you would perfect. Unbelievable and amazing work Irene!
Irene's ?. Perfect splash capture. I will substract 1 point from 10 only because I have seen some other images so similar to this one in Irene's portfolio..9
One of the most interesting droplet image I've seen in a long while. Great composition / colors. I might have clone out the 5 dops on the righ, as when I cover them I like the image balance a bit more. Great job!
I have tried so many times to do these sorts of shots, but have never EVER come to the beauty that this portrays! Did you get it all over your lens as i did, i hope im not the only one! Great macro and capture!
this is definitely one of the better one's i've seen like this .. just love the amazing sharpness in the drops and the way they're flying out ... the reflection and the bulge where the drop has impacted with the surface is excellent ..
