In Aperture, adjusted exposure, levels, and sharpness. In Photoshop I used the "soft light layer" trick to reduce some of the washed out areas and lighten the back of the boy, then resized and added the border.

I think moving to your left and turning a bit more to the right is what is missing. That would get the boy between you and the bush It would also give you more of what he is looking at. Because of the bright sunligh he appreas very washed out. On a lighter note, I saw this and thought the next statement is "I need to goto the bathroom."
well exposed image - but the boy facing away looking at the fountain isn't really that interesting - seeing a side view of him looking at the fountain woudl be much more interesting
the lighting looks very flat perhaps some more contrast would help? also the first think that went through my mind was that he is taking a wiz in the fountain, perhaps that says more about me than your photo thou :)
