I shot a photo very similar to this about 2 1/2 years ago, but for some reason I've always wanted to do a re-shoot and see if I could improve on the original.
I made the checkerboard in paint shop pro, and printed it out on a sheet of 8.5" x 11" matte photo paper. I set the glass cube on the checkerboard and started shooting away. Lit with a standard light in my kitchen :)
