The rails turned gold from a light surface rust caused by the recent rains. They'll turn silver again after the next train comes down these infrequently used rails.

Wow, I'm shocked that this won. A somewhat interesting photograph because of the gold, but a very average and mundane other than that. Of course it obvious my tastes don't really coincide with this site :) Congrats anyway.
I really like this shot. In an odd sort of way it takes me back...not forward, to when I was a kid, walking the tracks with my friends. All the way down to the surreal colors in the pic. It's awesome when a pic can spark a good memory. Thanks
Thank you for all the comments and votes. I'm glad you liked the photo.
Byshen - Thanks, I actually figured you would have won. I figured with the way the scores were lining up I would be in the top five. Hoped anyway. There were three shots that I thought had a better chance.
Dieghos - Should look familiar, we took the Alta California land from you long ago. Sorry 'bout that. :)
Anastasia - Whewww... dodged a bullet there. I'm glad you get to keep your membership.
To everyone who thought it had a lame title... yep it did. Sorry 'bout that. The title did, however, kinda work with what I was going for.
Very satisfying capture of disuse in a rare solitary scape with apt composition and wonderful natural tones.
The title feels somewhat -fetched- considering there is little evidence of a materialistic perspective in the image. The exquisite disassociative ambiance brought out in this picture suggest (to me) higher and more transporting ideals than the one chosen for the present capture.
Outstanding colouring, nearly surreal. Fine composition - background adds the interest that it would have lacked otherwise. Maybe a little more contrast needed in the foreground - but I'm nitpicking. A unique and very well executed variation of a cliche subject. Really good job. 9
I like this shot. I tend to like high contrast shots and you got that here. You also managed to keep things close (plant at bottom) in focus as well as things far away. Nice shot.
Wow, how nice and powerful image you had taken! You do a great job with this exposition, capturing the sky details and rail details perfectly. Congratulations. It´s very impressive.
Good photo, maybe a wee tiny bit dark? Maybe try a lower perspective, get down on your knees (Or lower your tripod) Good effort though, like the gold looking rails. 7
