I'm glad this image got some reaction. I realize that cases of bottled water are convenient but there is a better way. Plastic uses fossil fuels … pure and simple, and some people don't consider that. My original idea was to have a bottle floating horizontally in still water where the reflection of the bottle took the shape of the 2nd half. Anyway, the lens has once again proven to happily help me translate an idea into a nice image.
Did you know that hard water is better for you than soft water? But it's better to shower in soft water. That nasty iron tasting hard water is the healthiest water you can drink. It's rich in minerals.
Thanks for the comments. Here's a few alternatives to plastic bottles: In-fridge water-filter which will also make your ice-cubes filtered, refillable water coolers, Refillable jugs that you take to the store where you re-fill for a cost.
If bottles are a must … as has been mentioned - biodegradable corn-based plastics are becoming more popular and are made from a renewable resource.
Here is your poster. Congratulations on your Yellow.
I must add my two cents on the water situation:
Yes, you are right with the premise that we should not have to pay for water. However, the alternatives are dismal. Look at any big city. Water here is treated and rendered totally dead with additives, Yes, it is clean, but dead. It meets the requirements because it is h2o. I buy bottle water, which probably has more dirt, but closer to real water in spirit. I am not going to dring tap water rendered lifeless with chemicals and they even have the nerve to charge you for it.
Great photo and even better message! :) It's nice to see someone who cares about what's happening to the dwindling global supply of fossil fuels. When will people see that M. King Hubbert was right...
Congrats on the ribbon - an interesting concept well executed. Just as something to ponder - i think you over Neat Imaged this one - the sky looks strange (blocks of blur with sharp lines of contrast just to the right of the money in the bottle) and the detail of the hand and bottle has been plasticised too much. imo of course (i know water looks nice after NI - i've used that trick before) ;)
I love bottled water. I live in New Orleans and our tap water comes from the Mississippi River. Every river from here to Canada empties into my drinking water.
Your picture reminded me to stop by the store today and buy a case of plastic bottles filled with water.
I'm going to get some water from there and let you drink it for *free*.
There is a highly compostable (in 12 weeks), made from corn, bottle from Colorado, BIOTA, biotaspringwater.com You pay for quality and convenience, and consumer demand. At amusement parks and deserts there the highest.
Excellent photo tribute to our "Water Planet".
At Whitehouse Springs (Elyria-OH), you can come and fill your own reusable containers, at about 75-cents/5-Gallons.
Congratulations on the ribbon! Very cool image and I love the message. It is rediculous and irresponsible how much money we Americans spend on bottled water (especially since much of it is NOT of better quality than what we lucky people have coming out of our taps). Many times those plastic bottles are not recycled either - filling up the landfills! AND how much of our limited petroleum resources are we using to make those stupid plastic bottles anyway?! OK - that was my environmentalist rant - you'll have to forgive me...that's my job. : )
As much as I agree you do know that only 3% of the water in our world is drinkable right? and most of that drinkable water is in form of ice or in ground water in aquifers(squishy underground rock). So it is hard to get drinkable water so that is why we pay.
I think its sad how much water we waste in North America, with our 30 min showers and all that, which is also why we pay so much for our water.
The shot is exposed so well and the clarity is so nice that I can almost overlook the title. The neat image really benefits the glass with the money and I keeps wandering from the upper left part of the frame to the lower right part of the frame. Terrific-I can only expect that you will do the very well with this picture.
incredible photo. Im glad you chose this topic for the why photo. I happen to agree that bottled water is an unnecessary and false necessity (if that is what your trying to convey of course).
'why must we pay to drink' - I think it's probably the cost from getting it from point 'A' to point 'B'. And for filtering out all the bad stuff we put in it. Also, it's not everywhere. Where I live (which is not really 'Unknown'), it rains an average of 4 inches a year. Anyway, I like your photo. I'm wondering if you actually used a flash or had some extra lighting? Maybe something added in photoshop? I'll go with an 8 and wonder why somebody asked for validation. Strange to me.
Great lighting. I like the question you are asking here as well. The water looks a little unrealistic to me, looks kinda plasticized. Nicely done though.
