All of this was in one exposure but it was a 3 person job to get it right, one handsome model (my little brother), a photographer (me of course) and a mate to hold and aim the second flash. The flashes were handheld and its sort of painted so hopefully I dont get too many DNMC votes.
We recently got a 5m long remote shutter release cable which meant that I could stand a long way off to the side and manually fire a flash while someone else pointed a slave flash from the other side. Both flashes had pretty long snoots on them (home made from a coco pops box) so the spread of the light was pretty narrow. The low iso and small f/stop meant there was no ambient light so it was pretty easy to get my brother to change hats between flashes.
The hardest part was getting his heads lined up square and making sure that the light from both flashes actually hit his head. Out of about 30 shots this was one of the only ones where the heads were square and both flashes hit the right spot, almost.

Not sure what the stages are as its just a bit dark to me, the last one particually confuses me. Also I'll have to check back to see how this was done, good Luck
