I simply wannted to try something different compared to my other submissions. Not sure if it works though.
The image was taken in our 100 years old cellar. Behind the window I placed a 300W halogen lamp.

As I commented during the challenge, this is quite powerful. I am still not sure about the rope but that is a minor issue. The light flare on the window behind works symbolically for me (hope? another choice?) and the cellar is very effectively captured.
Thanx for all the kind and informative comments.
As this is my first try on an emotional composition, I'm extremely happy with its outcome.
All critiques are well placed: of course it was staged. Fortunately I didn't have a suicide candidate at hand.
The rope was also something I was aware of that it might be a little too much.
I would have loved it to make it wider, but I could not, because the corridor of our cellar is very narrow and it's made even narrower by the two bars at both side. They once served as reinforcement of the cellar, because it was used as bomb-shelter during WWII.
This is a chilling photograph. THIS is what I think of when I hear "On the Edge". The distressed walls, the light in the window, looking through the door, it all fits so well. Thank you!
this is a great moody shot. I love the set up and that it's bw. The ropes ont he floor a bit scary & adds just that more to the shot. The glare in the window is a bit distracting but who cares. I give it a 10!
This picture offers many possible interpretations, all of them depressing. It is well composed and exposed, and I especially like the sun caught in the corner of the window. A ray of hope, perhaps?
Dramatic and very gut wrenching scene that few photos on DPC have been able to accomplish for me. You\'ve captured the conflict and anguish of a person in this dilemna very well. I especially like the tones and bleak and barren setting in this tudor style room/house. It almost gives the impression of being in a dungeon or torture chamber, which, metaphorically speaking this person appears to be in.
Another effect I like very much is the constrained, hemmed-in feeling in this picture due to the, albeit, slanted walls and border and long portrait format, which leads to the "no way out" feeling. Though the light from the window is way too harsh and blown out, it giives the impression of life outside weighing too heavily on this person. The harsh light also gives a slight haze or film to the shot, which in this instance I like.
It\'s too bad that the electrical cabling shows on the ceiling, which I find distracting, as well as, some unknown object in the upper left hand corner. Other than that, very well done. Great job.
There were a couple of other "emotional" shots in this challenge that looked like they may have been set up. I only hope this one was. I like the lighting and the use of black and white
Very very good. Excellent use of light and environment to set the mood of the picture. I might have even used a slightly wider crop. I have feeling this one is going to get bashed by voters, as most artistically inclined photos do. Like to see it with a tad bit more contrast, but can't say for sure, you might have gotten right on that line of perfection. Iffy on the border, it seems too sleek for a shot of this power and raw emotion, perhaps after play around with an artistic border, or something. I'll definetly look you up after the challenge is over. 10 from me no problem! AWESOME!
