Used the 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4X teleconverter. Just basic editing with some dodge and burn. I have a similar one with surfers but decided this was the one I would enter. I also have a colour version, but like the drama in this.
This was shot around sunrise on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
PREDICTION: There are a ton of entries and I expect lots of competition. It should be a high scoring challenge. I reckon about a 6.2XXX
POST: WOO HOO I beat Achoo!!! my first blue! I can't believe it! It was really great competing with the master himself. Thanks Doc!
I was really pleased on all fronts: A blue, a personal best and a much higher score than I ever dreamed of! Thanks everyone for the great comments and votes!
a colour version...good thing I went for the duotone :-)

NEW SHERPET 'JEWEL' AWARDS TO THIS AWESOME IMAGE IS ONE OF THREE THAT I AM GIVING MY SHERPET 'JEWEL' AWARD OF EXCELLENCE DUE THE THE TALENT AND AWESOME PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THIS PHOTOGRAPHER... FROM SHEZ...
stunning action and drama, an awesome job. congrats on your blue!!! and what a way to get it. such a cool shot! just wonderful. i really really like the duotone one too, should be the cover shot for sufer magazine photo annual. is this anyone you know? i'm sure they would want a great big print of it as do i.
Kudos Enzo! This is amazing work and sets you well apart. A masterpiece that goes directly into my favs!!! The duotone was definitely a great choice as it focuses in on the drama of the surfer and the waves. I'm still staring in awe ...
Many congratulations, Enzo, on your first blue, with this beautiful composition. I really like the way the light shines through the wave/spray, especially in the left image.
What to say? Congratulations, even if I liked more another shot in this challenge, the blue ribbon is good to balance the one that you deserved SO MUCH and didn't get... I still love your hair entry very very very much! Hope you will not think I am unpolite not paying to you the compliments you deserve on this image and focusing my attention on another one ;)
Anyway, you really are a great photographer, I look forward to see more of your work! Continua così!
The light here is simply precious. Congratulations on a very well deserved blue, a stratospheric score, a personal best, and of course for beating Achoo. :-)
Very nice triptych Pasta and congratulations on winning the blue ribbon. It was quite nice to see one of my favorites for a challenge win...also good to see I didn't give your photo the kiss of death by liking it. ;-)
Black and White was a good choice. In the color version the color in the big one doesnt really go as well with the other two. Here they are all harmonious. All 3 shots are excellent.
Congratulations on winning with this finely crafted design and set of images. You deserve it after making all those comments and voting so many times. Enjoy the day!
Congratulations Enzo! :)
This is one of my top5 faves from the challenge. Not easy deciding between the color and b/w version, but I easily say the top right frame in color is my fave.
Wow - what were you thinking submitting this image? Did you think you would ribbon with this or something? Oh - wait a minute - you did ribbon? What was I thinking. Oh yeah - I was thinking this was the best shot in the challenge, thats what I was thinking.
What else can I say Enzo. Great work. All three are great images that fit perfectly together. The b&w was a great choice over the color - though the color has its own special charm I dont think it would have scored as well. I have absolutely nothing to suggest to make this better. This shot cuaght me at first glance and I felt bad for every image that came after it in voting cause this was my benchmark. High benchmark to reach thats for sure.
Enzo, CONGRATULATIONS on your first blue with such an impressing score from all users and particularly from commenters!!. I am glad you used the 70-200 to manage DOF so well in this set of stunning images. I love that lense.
Too bad I did not have a chance to vote. I would have given you the 46th 10 and a comment to rise your Avg commenter's score even more. I bet that 9.1250 for 77 comments is a dpc record or at least close to it.
Yay Enzo finally got the Blue you've deserved for so long. I prefer your colour version heaps more but then I really have a clue. Well done and congratulations.
Yep - Masterful use of the duo-tone - well done. The colour image is pretty, but nowhere near as atmospheric. That, and the surfers don't appear as crisp - particularly the top right one.
What a perfect study of light and shadow! Great action shots - love the crispness, and the organization of your composition. I also absolutely love the full color version, but the black and white really pulls it all together. Great job and congrats on your (overdue) blue!
Congrats, Enzo - your first blue and a personal best to boot! You made the right choice - color isn't as dramatic, and wouldn't have gotten the 10 this did from me. :)
"WOW".....Yes, you have finally got the "BLUE", that you so deserve, and it came with a truely magical image, that is breathtaking.....
So so deserved, and so wonderful, to see this happen to my "Aussie" friend..... C.O.N.G.R.A.T.U.L.A.T.I.O.N.S.
one of my favorites, should ribbon. i love the black and white.. these are just beautiful shots.. the only critique I have is the top right photo should be the largest, but the detail of the mist on the largest, the detail of that, tells me why you chose it.. 10
Absolutely fantastic trio! The way the light interacts with the spray is completely mesmerizing and I love that the surfer is in silhouette...beautiful work.
This is a bit different from the usual surf shots, I love the silhouettes and the sparkle of the surf. Very dramatic and works beautifully as a triptych.
On first round, I give this best in show! The b&w has depth and adds to the mood (it seems like so many times it is used in an attempt to make art out of a bad photo). A strong 10 from me. Good luck!
Edit: Yup, best in show, with "he sleeps well" a close second. I'm sure you'll both do well.
Shadow, highlights, & backlighting...absolutely love the technique, the effect and the photo! Doesn't hurt either that surfing is just plain cool. Excellent!
Back to comment. Amazing silhouettes. Excellent subject matter. Surfing, wow... the dof and tones are outstanding. Love every inch of this and it's hard to stop running my eyes all over it, drinking it up. Mad. 10 and faved :)
