looks like there is very tough competition for this coveted award of the brown ribbon, you need to dig deeper Stephen. the brown winner is a trademark brown in this challenge, perfectly OOF with very little apeal, your shot however is actually pretty bad but just not quite bad enough.. come on dude you can do worse than this.. TRY!
i really like the vibe of this pic. the slight oof and sharp lighting gives it an uncomfortable feel for me. i wonder how the bottom is fairly straight but the top is so slanted...very interesting...very odd.
The composition is pretty rough (wide angle makes straight lines look curved), items are half in the shot along the edges, it's pretty noisy and not well in focus.
Moreover, this is not an really an interesting story, unless you're trying to tell that of mundane, everyday life. Which people aren't really interested in looking at, because they're living it. =)
This was a tough topic, because it tended toward the mundane. The shots that will do well will probably make you look at kitchenware in a unique way.
I guess you did not use a tripod: the picture is slightly out of focus. The harsh light coming from the left blows out a lot of detail in the bright areas. Your POV is not really centered. You can see that at the lines of the stove being parallel to the picture border. If you look at the top, you can see the angle of the cabinets and the upper picture border.
What a shame the focus isn't a little crisper, as I do like the composition; the photo has the hint of narrative about it, rather than being a straight record shot - I find myself exploring the picture, wondering about the lives of the people who live here. If you didn't use it, some sharpening in photo editing would be beneficial.
