This is my first ever Challenge photo and i know it will do very poorly. But you have to start somewhere. This was the only thing i could photograph, and i wanted to enter.

OK, coming last is a bummer, but as you said, it was your first entry. Learn from your mistakes (most notably your exposure was your biggest downfall here) and you will do better next time. Dont give up though, at least you got an entry in.. good luck and hope you stick around.
The lighting on this shot is really drab. It makes your butterfly look old and dirty. Theres only one subject in the whole shot that is entirely in the shot. Everything else is cut in some way or another. I think because of the lighting, nothing is really standing out as a focal point. If you had set up a light to the left side maybe you'd get some depth and that center flower would pop out some. As it is right now there's not enough shadow for any of the flowers to stand out on their own. They kinda just look like a blob of red. That extra lighting would help bring out the sparkles in the wings of the butterfly too.
