Thanks all for the comments. I was asked in many of them how I did this photo:
I took a picture of the sunset from my roof, on Friday night. I printed this image, and the next day I went back to the same spot on the roof. I used a very thin fishing line to place the paper plane on the horizon (with my wife’s help), and shoot as many as possible, at all sorts of angles. I used a mirror to light up the paper which of course was too dark against the sunset light, and moved out of focus quite a bit with the wind. Most takes were unusable cause the fishing line showed. It was pretty hard to get it as I imagined it. At the end I had at least as many as 8 options and I will never be sure if I chose the right one. Apparently I didn´t.
Nice idea using the same motive on the paper. A bit motion blur would be nice to symbolise the movement of the paper plane (in case it really flew and you didn't set it up... Hm do I see a small string across the palm tree? ;-) Good composition, lighting(!) and focus. -stephan
Woo! Lovely sunset. Did you make the plane out of foil to get the reflections on it? I was confused, as it seemed the side of the plane nearest to us was reflecting things which were behind it, then I decided maybe the mountains continue round behind the photographer and there is another palm tree. But I am not really sure! Please let me/ us know. 7, Kavey
i really don't understand the reflection in the airplane. did you make it out of metal? this is a nice shot, but the plane just seems stuck there and lifeless. a better angle would have helped, maybe from below the plane looking up from behind it.
This is a beautiful image. Exquisite sunset and great silhouettes. Nice composition. The finishing touch of course is the paper plane that has the same image of sunset as what I'm looking at right now :) Had it been just a white paper plane it would have detracted from the gorgeous sunset scene depicted here. The fact that it is pretty much the same image makes me chuckle and gives it a nice surrealist touch to the image. Great job. 10 Journey
At first I thought there was a reflection in the airplane, and then I was thinking, How could the reflectin of the sun be on THIS side of the airplane? So I came to the conclusion that you must have printed the photo and turned it into an airplane and then flew it...lol Basically, I have no idea how this was done, but it's a great sun set, definately depicts childhood, and the angle and frame filling are great. Great job and good luck in the challenge.
Great idea! It seems like the paper airplane has the background on it. Did you do a quick print, make a plane and fly it all in one evening? Very cool idea! This gets better and better!!! 10 Swash
I like this picture, although it's a little too dark. What exactly is there on the paper plane? I see the same picture. Did you print it and then made the plane?
Cool repetition of image between the plane and the tree, but I'd like a more dynamic angle on the plane. I realize that would be tough, given the speed the sun sets ... ideally, I'd like to see the plane head right for the camera.
I always do a quick scan of the photos to see which ones I want to vote on first.... This one seriously caught my atention right away. Great concept - I am sure this is what we all thought as kids about our paper airplanes. Excellent.
