Just a quick note of thanks for the comments -- I'm very excited and proud to have a Top 5 photo!
A couple notes about the picture... I had about a 15-minute window of time to capture this in the light I wanted (as the sun went down below the roof). I struggled quite a bit to get the whole birdie in focus. My initial efforts had part of it in focus but not the whole thing, plus some of the shots had a pretty weird effect with the grains of the roof tiles being in/out of focus, so I did a lot of experimentation with the F-stops to get the appropriate DOF.
My other challenge was the wind. Even the slightest breeze would knock the stupid thing off the roof, so I stuck a big bolt in the tip of the birdie to keep it there. If you look really closely, you can actually see a very small part of the silver in the bolt where the tip meets the yellow material.
Oh, and my first thought was indeed to use a frisbee (as a couple people mentioned). I couldn't find a suitable frisbee around the house, so I actually went to several stores in search of one. The stores apparently discontinue them at the end of summer, so I was out of luck. In retrospect, I'm glad I went with this because it offers a little more depth than what I probably would have had with a frisbee.
Lol - this is great. Love the DoF and I *dont* want to know how you got on your roof to take this. Lovely colour and light and excellent use of humour. Love it. 10 - floyd
Excellent composition great execution. I wonder where you are from that badminton is a childhood sport for you... I always remember footballs and frisbees...
There is an upload problem with this photo for some reason, the whole photo wont load on the comment screen. It says that the file size is "unknown". I can't hold that against you, it's not your fault. I can see the whole photo from the thumbnail, so I know it's nothing you did, just a glitch either on the site, or my computer. I LOVE the clarity of this photo. You can see each little grain on the shingles. Depicts childhood great. For me, it would have been the frisbee. lol. The angle and lighting are perfect. I like how you see the large yellow one in front and the white one in back, to give the feeling that this has happened before. Great shot and good luck in the challenge.
Wow. How many times. I like the composition (placing the yellow birdie on the far left makes it look more otu of reach to me), the lines of the shingles and gutter, the shadow (good timing with regard to the sun in the sky), the 2nd birdie in the gutter...even the variety of colors. This was my highest-rated of the photos.
I had forgotten this memory until I saw your shot - now it comes flooding back. Nice colours, nice DOF on the roof surface. Now get down from there before you fall :) 6, Kavey
You must be a member of the "Frisbeetarianism" religion... Frisbeetarinaiasts believe that when you die, your soul leaves your body and gets stuck up on the roof :) Excellent shot... = 8 - jmsetzler
OOH, I like this one! and Sooo true too. I would be the one on the roof getting the birdie! Just wish the dof was greater...NOT, Just kidding, actually it is perfect! This is the type of image that should have a shallow dof. It really enhances the subject of attention. EXCELLENT - you know what, this is one of my very few 10s GREAT WORK Ruthann
I enjoyed this one. The idea of another lost in the gutter was very good, and the focus on the first plane makes the composition stand out nicely. Nice shadow on the lower right. I lost some of this in my childhood days, so it does meet the challenge from my perspective.
Very nicely executed. I like the sharp focus on the birdy. I like the shadow. The remnant of past incidences is nice too. The colors are rich. Overall well done. 8-9, will decide better later. just-married
This reminded me of another game that seems to have gone by the wayside: Croquet. The composition of this shot is very well done. You caught enough of the circumstantial so as not confuse or baffle the viewer. (Personally, I consider it important to be able to tell something about the surroundings.)
This brought up more memories of my own childhood and made me laugh. Would have preferred to see the badminton thingy more in the foreground. It is sharp but the foreground there is a little blurred and disturbs somewhat. Nice angles, nice composition otherwise. Fun original idea. 6 Journey
this definately brings back memories of the interrupted games of childhood.I like the shadows, the smooth against the rough of the roof, however the stuff in the corner of the gutter is somewhat distracting
