Another shot from the same session as my Color Portrait 2 entry (her sister). The entire family could be professional models, so the only hard part was choosing.
My typical lighting setup these days... brolly box at front left, large shoot-through umbrella at right rear, and a gold reflector in the right foreground. This is a little contrastier than my norm, and I wish I had Advanced Editing to deal with the background and dark eye.
Processing: Convert from RAW, Levels, Channel Mixer, more Levels, then Channel Mixer conversion to B&W, add slight tone with HSL, USM, Curves, add frame, and slight Noise Ninja.

Awww...that hat adds wonderful interest and texture to this shot and she wears it well! I can see a few things (that you've mentioned) that using advanced editing would help the shot. However, as it is I feel it is still a strong portrait that really conveys some personality of the little girl. I also like that this little girl LOOKS like a little girl - and not some made up model-wannabe. Great job.
Shannon, a wonderful portrait! I'm always amazed at your ability to control light. You have an exquisite handle on exposure in all your shots. Congratulations and well deserved.
oh MAN ... another ribbon well deserved ... gorgeous ... just gorgeous ... I cannot BELIEVE the collection of photos that your family will have to pass on in 50 years !
All your relatives must be completely spoiled with the kidshots you send, your siblings with kids probably get reject notices for their snaps. Congrats!
very lovely, congrats on another robbon yadayadayada... and not even visibly terrorizing her with eyes under the bed.......! ;-) I just know they're gonna tell stories when they are older.....
My pick for the Blue ribbon without hesitation. The lighting is superb and the style, technique and quality is masterful. Outstanding work! Bumping up... :)
With the exception of the fact that the child appears to be wearing lipstick, this is a goreous portrait. A very sweet looking model who looks as though she has bags of character, lovely even lighting that compliments the mood of the photograph perfectly. So far my only 10.
Ohmygosh! What a beautiful little girl, and a precious portrait! Who cares about a dumb score (although I hope this is getting a great one) when you end up with a photo like this to enjoy forever! :)
