All I know is if I can fool the voters to win a ribbon, i'd do it in a flash :P

I remember there was a 2-second exposure challenge last year. The challenge was to take an exposure of 'exactly 2 seconds'. One of the top three was on a 1/2 or 1/8 second shot if I recall. The shutter speed was listed it the specs of the pic.
I complained that I tried for days to come up with a good 2 second shot but could not get it right and did not enter. IMO the 2 second shot was difficult.
I complained about it in a forum and go many many emails telling me to lighten up because it was a great shot and that DNMC is ok, even if it wins.
You should expect some of the same replies!

Oh well...very disappointed. Not in the shot - I like it and think it is a very well executed idea and very well presented. However, the challenge was clear that more than one source of light was to be used. I don't care how many times you flash it or strobe it, if it is the same light source, then it was NOT multiple. Especially if that light source was stationary.
I realize you got the blue for this but I am sorry, I feel it was not well deserved and you 'deceived' the voting public with the submission. A good shot is a good shot. But even the best shot is not worthy of the blue if it did not meet the intent of the competition.
Lighting is the most important element in photography. Make the obvious use of multiple light sources a key factor in your composition this week.
Dan,
The almost perfect non-intersecting and balanced paths of the pencils are truly amazing! The more I look at it the more I think how well executed it is...and more questions come to my mind to learn how to do this. I hope reading them does not bother you too much :-)
Given the technique you used it seems like it could take hundreds or thousands of shots to get one like this. It would be great if you could tell us how many shots, approx, did you take? Is this a cropped composition? If yes, did you crop to balance? or the black bg felt short?. Thanks for your time and patience.
Hmm I geuss it was 25(or more) flashes not 20, i thought it was 20(my flash might be inaccurate or maybe its just me). The exposure was 1/4th of a second total, the flashes were milliseconds apart. The blue pencil just happened to be in the frame for all 25 flashes, the others were not.
Yes there was one light, however it flashes more than one time so i personally thought that it counted as multiple. If you don't think it meets the challenge then oh well.
Very nice picture !
It is a very good use of the stroboscopic flash !
I would never think about this !
There was however at least 26 flashes and not 20, as the blue pencil tells us ;)
I suppose that this comes from your shutter at 1/4th it gives 25 flashes at 100 hertz that's why.
Congratulations Dan!
What I said in my previous comment was not aimed to diminish the high merit and perfect execution of the photo. Thanks for sharing the technic you used. I will not try it at home 'cause I doubt I will be able to throw the pencils at the same time without sticking them in the ceiling :-).
To explain further, I threw the 3 penicls in the air at the same time and there was a single set of 20 flashes. My hands were never in the frame, and the editing was just levels and shadows/highlighs, nothing interesting really.
I accidentily put it in the nude gallery. And im trying to get it changed.
Nice...but can you post how you did this? I don't care if it is multiple light sources or not. I'd really like to know how I can use my flash (which is strobe capable) to do this!
I don't mean to be a pest here, I know you've already given an explanation about the way you did this, still, it is not clear to me the way the pencils were held with your hands. Were you wearing black gloves? how did you manage to conceal your hand and forearm from the shot? were you all naked and painted pitch black? is that why you chose to place your picture in the nude gallery? :-) . Also, I take it there were 3 bursts of 20 flashes each, I assume you had the shutter open throughout by pressing with your left hand, while you maneuvered the pencils with your other hand, how did you manage to produce the 3 separate bursts? did you have a helper do that? I hope you will take the time to answer. Please know that I am not questioning the legality of your picture, I just want to learn stuff. Thank you.
Sure It is a GREAT photo, btw one of the 10's is mine. In my comment I assumed this had been made with multiple strobes, but it is kind of disapointing to find out this is NOT a multiple light source shot, since the light is coming from one strobe. I am quite new at this, so the moral I learn is you do not have to comply with the topic to win a ribbon, because once you get it, the SC is only going to judge compliance with the editing rules...interesting.
while there has been a lot of discussion about this, you can not be DQ'd for not meeting the challenge DETAILS just the rules. There have been certain challenges where you MUST meet the details or be DQ'd but they are few and far between.
(I know you didn't mention DQ'ing the image but basically the same thing)

haha, hidden due to content. I guess spinning pencils is equivalent to a nude women? haha, great photo by the way and congrats on the blue! Its well deserved.
Congratulations on your blue ribbon. Great picture. I hope you will tell us how exactly you setup this pic. Beyond the use of the strobe function; what did you use to spin the pencils? how? Thank you.
This shot was quite simple.
I set my flash to 20 flashes at 100 hertz which equates to 1/5th of a second. Set up a black background about 20 feet away. I spun the pencils in the air with my right hand and set off the shutter with my left.

Really fabulous. Can't wait to see your technique here. This one I gave a 10 to because the light is wonderful, and your ability with doing this in basic editing is absolutely beyond what most people can do here. Great image.
As much as I like this shot, I'm not sure it fits the challenge, multiple light sources, it looks to me like a single light source, multiple times, a strobe light, I'm giving it a 5, the frame, timing, rocus, exposure is all really good, good luck.
Beautiful shot and RGB composition!!..one of the top 3 in this challenge..I am picking it as a fav.
Can“t wait to read how you did it. I am not sure how you made it with multiple strobes. IMO the crop does not have a perfect balance but I assume it is due to complexity of framing this kind of shot...so I'll still give you a 10.
Nice colors and clarity. I think the twisting in the blue urned out the best because of the bright spots, but it just didn't work out that well for the other colors.
