I think with some creative cropping this will be a very nice portrait. I'd take the sky down to just above the very tip of his ear thereby eliminating the overblown highlights. I'd also reduce the right side negavtive space to be about equal to the left. Clone out the fence wire, adjust for black and white points in levels, and, wham, beautiful shot! Yeah, too bad he didn't have a bath first, but maybe you can clean him up with the healing brush.
Where I grew up, there was a horse just like this, and I used to feed him oranges from the grove nearby. I am thinking that you will crop right to the tops of the trees in the final edit. I understand that you had to overexpose the sky to get the detail in the horse to show up like it is.

Sorry the background sky blew out on you like that :) I don't know what you could have changed to make it better in camera because you didn't post your settings... BUT, you CAN just crop it out in post processing :) hehe
i like the way the horse is so big and the background buildings are so small by comparison ... the entire images colouring is very subdued ... be interested to see edit ..
Nice job with those whites! With a little downplaying in the background and highlighting on the horse, plus minor horizon adjustment, you'll have a beauty here!
