Named in deference to my source of inspiration for this challenge, Chris Lawrence's fantastic ice work at //www.icepoetry.com. This is not what I had envisioned, but I've wanted to give it a try since I found his site and then Ice came up as a theme. I wish I had the time and equipment to figure out his obviously far superior lighting techniques.

Setup:

I bought some inexpensive spray roses and froze them upside-down in a Tupperware cereal container. For the shoot, I just flipped the container upside down in a clear pyrex baking dish (to contain the water as it melted), let it melt enough to slip out, and draped a piece of wax paper over my trusty directional halogen desk lamp to diffuse the light and soften the glare from the ice.

Post challenge: I was a bit crestfallen to see so many others had the same idea, but pleased to make the top twenty despite the repetition. Woot! Though I have to admit, I'm baffled by the high score when I don't really like it that much. I vastly prefer the painted feeling of the two roses, "Duet", in the outtakes below.

Here's an outtake and another version, both processed beyond the scope of Basic Editing:

My daughter and I attempted a similar idea for the ice challenge. Did not come out like yours so we didn't enter. Good thing. Yours is very cool, no pun intended. Our ice came out foggy so you couldn't see the flowers. I love how crisp your focus is and the composition of the rose. Great job.

I think yours are just as good as his if not better! These are really beautiful! What a creative idea! And the composition is perfect!

I'm surprised these aren't on the front page!
