India was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Every picture is very important to me, and I almost didn't feel inclined to enter a single one in a challenge on this site. On the other hand, I'd like to share the pictures with as many people as I can.
This particular photo was taken on a day I was sick. Not from some foreign disease, but a homegrown synthetic one from Malaria-prevention pills. I had the strangest reaction to them which made me have sick flashes and so weak I could barely open a bottle of water. I would have space-out phases with freaky flashes of empty space and strange nightmares... A very bad trip. I was lucky to have Les take care of me for the days I was iffy. Eventually we figured out what the culprit was. So I stuck it to the man, stopped taking my malaria pills and never regretted it. I'd be happy to die of malaria any day instead of missing great photo opportunities.
This is baba Vijay Nund, a holy man who spends his days contemplating existence with the boys of his gacht on the Ganga River. It is said that one drop from the holy river will cleanse you of all the sins of your past lives...
640 pixels is ridiculously small and this looks much better as a 36x24 print
i saw this in your slideshow this morning on your website. ive made it a habit to study one or two of your photos when i wake up in the morning, i tend to get really inspired that way:) anyways, keep up the good work joey
Not one to post a comment, but I'd like to say how amazing this photograph is to me. I thought, at first that it was posed... unreal. It's what we live for though huh? Those incredibly profound moments that become a part of who we are. That you would share this is appreciated. Aloha
First of all great shot - I think you would make a fine photojournalist or the like. 2ndly I am not sure if you intended this but ... for me this is a perfect example of a leading lines shot! A giant blue arrow showing me the path (of life). Love the India portfolio.
it's stuff like your india work that makes me want to put my camera in the closet, pull the covers over my head, and just give up. but then i realize that it takes shitty photographers like me to make good photographers like you look even better. :P
What can I say that others haven't done so already? This is one of my favorite shots that you have taken and shared. "Fantastic" is just not adequate.
I took a few minutes to review your India Collection and was equally impressed. You are very talented and your skills are evolving into a consumate professional. The command you have over your tools is amazing. I only wish I had 1/10th of your talent. Congrats and keep up the great work.
HI Joey,
the India collection is just amazing. Well done, a stunning collection of images.. AND you should write to Canon for a commision as you have just sold a whole heap of 85mm 1.8 lenses for them!
Stunning Joey! Haven't been on for awhile - you've been busy! This portfolio is amazing. I had to go thru every image. Feels almost as if I were there. Beautifully captured.
All of your India photos are fantastic and I thank you for sharing them with us. What a wonderful and amazing experience you have had.
I am really glad this photo ribboned. It is so emotive and speaks to the soul.
The blue along the stairs, the warm colors in his clothing and the neutrality of the wall all come together so well. Very visually appealing photo. Yusef.
I loved this photo the minute I saw it in the challenge. I'm so glad it won a ribbon. I am mesmerized by yours and Lesley's photos of India! THANK YOU for sharing them with us! And congratulations on this very deserving ribbon!
Just stunning Joey, the image radiates a spiritual aura! I am sorry to hear you were ill during your trip and glad you got it figured out. I want to see all the pictures!! I am coming to your house ! :)
Congrats!
I have no idea why this image placed third. This is obviously a well thought, well rounded photo, with great composition and colour. And the most beautiful old man that could ever be photographed.
I dont know why pictures that are continuously being repeated of the same surrounding keep winning. They are good, but they are just getting old to me.
Amazing work
Wow. Congratulations on your finish. This was definately a tough challenge. So many great photos. I love the feel of this photo. I wish I was better at putting my feelings into to words but I am not. Trust me when I say this is a fantastice photo in every way and it deserved to be on the front page. Hope to be as good as you one day. See you in the future challenges.
Amazing shot, very deep and insightful.
Your India Collection shows you've grown as a photographer and an artist with the sensitivity to feel and convey the alternate realities in our world.
Your photographic skills to capture the moment, along with your masterful editing techniques gives us a collection worthy of any old seasoned photographer working for National Geographic.
Congratulations Joey, and I hope you keep sharing your wonderful work with us.
I wish for more photographs about other face of India. All the photographs are from varanasi.
And India's culture, morals, economics.... change for every states. North to South, East to West.
Joey ... There are some experiences in life that leave a HEAVY scar in ones mind. I totally understand why you would feel like keeping those memories and visions within. India must be facinating and Bless you for sharing this amazing emotion with us.. this is INCREDIBLE, well taken, you are a fantastic young photographer. CONGRATULATIONS on your experience dude.
Well Joey, you are so blessed with wonderful photography skills, but also a genuine soul, to be able to feel deep inside of you, to get such moving and emotional images like this. We are truely blessed, that you share not only your photogrphy, but you skills, and your stories behind the images, that you take. Thank you so much.
Beautiful image Joey - done it again. If this was taken in Varanassi I can understand your mind set (despite feeling sick). It really is the heart of India and brings up many mixed emotions.
Awesome shot! Only you could have done justice to such shot. You made the 'normal' (in India) look like exceptional. The image has its own spirit :) Congrats!
How do you manage to do so much traveling? What's you're secret?
Awesome shot...
If I recall correctly, Tonic water has quinine or something to that affect which is supposed to be one of the things they had you take for malaria. Maybe you can just drink Tonic water. Of course, although it might not make you sick it tastes horrible. (IMHO)
Wow -- there aren't too many shots that make me actually utter the word "wow" as I'm looking at them, but this is really, really cool. I expect to see it somewhere at the top of the heap. Nice work!
The turquoise color strip through the middle of this shot (up the stairs) makes this outstanding for me. Reminds me of something from ancient biblical times. Well Done! *9*
