My 4th entry in a row with the Sigma macro lens. I like new toys. ;-)
This one presented a few challenges. The tube nozzle was cut from an old tube of paint and hot glued to a banana of the same size. I hollowed out the back end and scraped it thin with a razor blade so it would roll, then secured it with a toothpick (which is still visible- oops). The "paint" is whipped heavy cream and food color. I made a "blob" of whipped cream with a tall peak using a cake decorator's icing tube, then lowered the banana nozzle onto it and tilted it over so it would look like the paint was coming out of the tube. Took me a little while to figure that part out! To get the lighting, I draped black fabric over a chair to make a "tent" underneath, then shot it with a brolly box on the right and a reflector on the left.
Processing: Cleaned up the edge around the nozzle and a few spots on the bananas. I smoothed a bump on the top of the banana and nudged the bottom edge for better alignment with the nozzle. Desaturated the cap and bristles on the white paint brush, and reduced saturation on the blue channel. Slight crop and rotation, assorted dodge and burn, Levels, HSL and USM.
Whew... after 19 ribbons in a row without a yellow, it suddenly seemed like I couldn't get anything BUT yellow. Thanks for the votes and all the great comments! FWIW, I did think of using an artist's palette, but I figured a decent wood background would be simpler (and cheaper). This was a table that I've had since I was 15.

i was blown away by this the first time i saw it, and i still am. how do you get pics like that? your assume and you deserve all the wining ribbons you've won.
Congratulations Shannon...I always love reading your story behind the picture and the way you went about things. So please, always give us the details. You are one of the most creative photographers at dpc by a long shot...well done
...it must take time to come up with such unique concepts!
It certainly does! I thought of the basic idea while brainstorming for the Yellow III challenge last April, but decided it would be too hard. I went back to it when this challenge was announced and spent much of the week figuring out how to make it happen.
Shannon! Love this one! Do you actually work?? I mean, it must take time to come up with such unique concepts! :-)
Congrats!
Nah, the bastard invented a robot that does his day job so he could have more time thinking up challenge entry. When is my robot due Shannon, I already sent you that 1200mm 5.6 last week, I thought we had a deal?
wow cant believe i didn't see this one during the challenge, this is awsome! I wish i could come up with ideas like these, i need to think outside the box i guess.
Sheesh dude - you get a DQ and come back with three straight ribbons (and a handful of honorable mentions to boot). Time to go back to your other Avatar :)
Hehe this is great :) So great that it is in my top 5.
The idea is very good and everything is well put to gether.
Only thing I can think of that could have made this look even better is if you would have had one of those .. i think it´s called pallete (or something) because nobody I know paints of the table.
Really cool concept but I don't think the photo really carried it through...
I'm not diggin the wood table. I think you could have gone a little further with this and maybe have it on a canvas or sketch paper with other fruits as colors too.
This idea is very fun. I would have liked it to be simpler. Maybe less bananas in the background or move them closer to the subject. IMHO. Good Luck. 8
It is a nicely creative shot, in large part for the image you've set up. The shot seems a little dim, but only slightly. Because it is such a fun and creative set up, the image really wins me over.
Score = 8
Brilliant! Love the concept and the execution of this composition. That tube of oil paint fit in quite nicely into the skin of the banana - matter of fact it looks flawless! Love the added touch of the 'paint tube' rolled up in order to squeeze out the paint. Love all the added details that boast the visual interest of the shot - from the two additional bananas in the background to the oil brushes to the almost same hue of paint squeezed out of the tube. I was going to add that you needed to show a portion, show a canvas or even add an artist pallete but that would 'clutter' up the image unnecesarrily. Keeping it simple with just the main elements and nothing more is the best presentation. Wonderful job!
