I saw this photograph and fell in love with it. It is beautiful, thoughtful, creative, and bold yet sweet. Then I went over to vi.sualize.us and found your photo again. It does not link back to you as far as I can tell. And, most offensively, people have titled the photograph "Death". I wanted you to be aware that it was floating out there. I saved it on my own vi.sualize.us and gave it your own title and credited it back here. Hope that helps. :)
What an amazing shot, I am new to his site and just came across your portfolio. I have spent the past hour going through your photographs. Very impressive
There are a number of things that can explain the low votes; a dislike of the portrait genre; a dislike of repetition in submissions; a suspicion that the photographer actually isn't challenging him/herself; a dislike of a sense of exploitation in photography (not everyone like Arbus' work, either); a dislike of the high-contrast mono production; a bunch of other stuff, probably.
The fact is, that this is a popularity contest here, and Manny knows he can score well with this stuff. If his sole consideration re DPC is to score well, it is evidently inevitable that a shot of this woman would be his entry.
My personal opinion is that it's a boring choice (both as entry and as winner), for that very inevitability, and in a genre that I just don't understand, and that doesn't seem very 'photographic' to me: rather, 'illustrative'. But more power to Manny for his popularity here, and his success outside of here; and likewise, more power to those willing to voice their dislike of that sense of inevitability in challenge results these days.
That is not true LARUS. We don't like the picture!!!!
The picture is to dark crop is to much. Is this a Blue ribbon I will stick with Brown ribbon!
And you'll likely get your wish, Whiterook.
As for you, Manny...well - you already know what I think about the entire series with Rosalinda. Pure Genius. Ballsy and real...the way an A-Class artist should be ;)
Well looks like there are about 9 people here on DPC that don´t like you Manny (the 1,2 & 3 scores) but the rest thankfully are a bit more mature :)
Congrat´s dude! Don´t like this as much as your texture shot but that one was just friggin awesome, this is too of course and would have voted it an 8.

whiterook, if you have a very dark calibration on your CRT/LCD, that might be true. But trust me when I say this is truly a masterpiece, and it's perfectly exposed. You may wanna checkout a Spyder, to automatically calibrate your monitor.
On my monitor your entries seem very overexposed, so I'm guessing it's a calibration problem.
wow, who in their right mind would give this shot a 1, that's just pathetic... i guess lowballing happens everywhere and on brilliant work. congrats on your win.. this is stunning and well deserved!!!

Thank you so much everyone. I will bring the good news back to Rosalinda.
And yes...if you happen to go to the Philippines, do find her. She's selling cigarettes in downtown Iloilo, a city in the central part of the Philippines. And you won't miss her. She has her hair in pink.:)

Congrats, Manny! This is an exceptional shot, well deserved. I see you used the 60mm macro - I've not really tried it for portraits before, but now I definitely will!
I love the fact that someone out there gave this a photo a 1-
I personally gave it a 10 and it was one of my top 3 picks. Congrats in a tough field of wonderful images.
Congrats on your blue ribbon! I'll have to go check your profile and see if you have won any other ribbons, this is really impressive! jk, I knew when I first saw this it was going to win. The amount of talent you possess is unbelievable. Many congratulations.
Sad to see this didn't make your high scoring row in your profile. Just sad. Breakin my heart. Waaahhhh. ...just razzin' ya Manny! Your bar is so high it's hard to imagine what it takes for you to outdo yourself. Congrats on the blue!
Manny!! I am not fond just giving "oohhhs and ahhhs I like it, etc" but when I saw this on the most popular galleries with another site, "WOW" was the only word that came out of my mouth.
Since this is the second time I saw this and my mouth isn't hanging open anymore due to awe :-O, I can finally say more. The beauty on her face is still pretty unmistakable even with all the deep lines that now cover her skin. You have such an eye to capture the essence of life through your work. I hope this will win the BLUE! If not, so what!, you are already a winner anyway!! Good luck!
this is an amazing, dramatic, thought provoking and beautiful photograph ...
i love your processing and everything about this image . the crop and contrasts work so well ... IMO this should definitely get a ribbon ....... =10
Wow. I don't even know where to begin to say more about this absolutely, stunningly drop you dead in your tracks image. Well done, my friend, well done indeed!
Photos like this make feel unworthy to compete here. AT the same time they inspire me to keep searching for captures that show this much emotion. This truly raises the art of photography to a different plateau. 10
I gotta say after first seeing your other photos of her this one pales in comparison. It just doesn't have quite the clarity. Still a fascinating study and scored it as such. Good luck!
ETA: Ok this one is starting to grow from me. Besides, it is after all your most memorable subject posted at DPC this year so bumping up!
not as good as your other shots of her. (assuming this is Manny) I think you've milked this subject enough. If this isn't Manny, you should know that people will think that it is.
hey librodo,
i loved the original. this one isn't my cup of tea. i find the composition to be not at its best. the close up makes the shot to noisy for me. to many distrations and the nose isn't in focus and it's smack in the middle of the frame. The lighting also seems to be really harsh...or a little too harsh anyways. all in all it's a good shot, but the original was better. 7
The tones of this photo would, I dare say, have placed you amongst the winners of any B&W or portrait challenge. In this one, you are within a tough set of opponents, but I will be surprised not to see this on the front page of results. Quality.
Manny, this lady is your favourite subject! Great detail captured here once again...I have to be honest and say that your ribbon winner was much better, but obviously you couldn't enter that...still...a 9 from me
Fantastic up-close-and-personal portrait with wonderful sharpness. Do like the high contrast but perhaps it's a touch too high - the whites seem a little harsh. But perhaps that was the intention.
This was my favourite of the series you took of this beautiful woman. I even remember reading your forum post about her which is something I never bother to do. With this image you have drawn emphasis on her character and even the faults that make her who she is. This photo is art. You tha manny.
I'm getting tired of seeing the same picture over and over again. In my opinion, from the photography's standpoint, this portrait is just like many others; most of the impact of this portrait comes from the choice of the model. Granted, spotting a subject/model also takes skill, but I believe a true photographer should strive to remove his dependency on the subject, whereas pictures like this demonstrate how strongly some well-regarded photographers depend on their subjects. 4
