On a cruise excursion in Belize City, Belize. We left the shopping area to check out the surrounding neighborhood. Came across this local mother feeding her baby. Wasn't really shooting for the challenge but I think this is a strong image for Harsh Environment. May be too PhotoJ for DPC, we'll see.

Fits the challenge certainly, think I would have voted this higher with better processing though, like with higher contrast and more desaturated or black and white but nice shot, 6 from me.
Regarding the photo and the photo only - it has nice focus and I like the lighting as well as the contrasting colors. To me it's a snapshot that doesn't seem very to have much of a harsh environment and there is no use of anything outside of basic editing. I was hoping for more.
These types of shots that tell stories are the ones that should do well. Worthy of more than the 2 second look as they have an impact beyond the quick eye candy types of images. A great study and excellent interpretation of the challenge. I hope this does well for you. Bumping up to an 8 for now.
I have always wondered how people get photos like this? Do you ask for their permission first? Do you pretend like you are taking a picture of something over their sholders? Do you just walk up, snap the picture, and run?
