ok...Details: Set up the shot on my kitchen table, using a while cloth as a back drop. I tried a few times, regular ambient light, a desk lamp, candles...The first try with candles was too dark, it didn't work at all. Set up on Saturday again this time with 5 times more candles. The lighting came out perfect to me. Then, I tried to get the best positioning.
Etc: I dislike doing set-up shots...but sometimes everyone has to resort to it. Also, there's a big difference between an obviously set up shot...and a set up shot that looks natural. And, I suspect I might get low scores because the picture does not have anything brand new...But it's certainly is SOMETHING new :) We'll see what happens...

Psyche, normally I wouldn't take the time to comment after the fact, but since I didn't bother to vote on this particular challenge I wanted to tell you that for once I actually found your photo to really out do most of the photos above yours, not to mention it fully outdid at least 2 of the 3 winners. Among the obvious technical wonderments of this photo lies pure emotion and meaning. Something people often lack, something many of the photos here lack. I commend you, but most of all I commend you for having the guts to upload a meaningful photo among the new crayons and pencils.
Not having a particular religious preference, I wasn't aware what the things on top of the testament were. I thought they were carrots, or strange roots. It wasn't until after I asked someone that they told me they were candles. I wish we could see the entire charm on the end of the chain. The lighting is very good. The reference to something new is clear (however the testament it's self is really old) I do like the angle, but think it should be a little wider to show more detail. Good luck in the challenge.
YES! This represents a lot to me. New LIFE above all. I love the idea here. Now on to the criticism....what is the chain all about? I can't really make out the (cross?) Knowing the subject of the NT I'd guess it's a cross but that should be clearer. I have no idea at all what that other thing on the NT is. Plastic carrots?? Oh wait...hubby came in and said they are candles...probably. LOL...Whatever it is, it adds no virtue to this picture and should have been removed. I do like the lighting of your image. My suggestions would be: 1-remove the candles, and 2-put the cross in a position where it can be clearly recognized, so it will strongly support the concept.
too yellow. what are those vegetables on the book? oh! it's candles? they look like sausages of some kind. nice idea though because it's something very old that's still called 'new'
An interesting representation on "new"... I'm not sure what the items on the bible at the top right are. The fuzziness of the top left is a bit distracting, but overall, I liked it.
The candles look like dead fingers! The two texures don't complement well. But the Bilbe part works, Unfortunately a photo is only as good as it's WORST component. Every detail should add, if not it detracts,
At first glance I really like this photo. The chain is a bit out of focus, but does not detract from the photo. I could be picky about the depth of field, but I think that what you did in this picture works. The candles are a bit distracting though... 7
Please don't take this as a criticism, it is just an observation: I can't tell what the chain is and I'm not sure how the candles fit into the overall message. (My pictures aren't scoring too well either, so take this with a grain of salt.)
Sorry, but this is just too red and too dark. (I can sort of come up with a reason for red, but it's a stretch, but dark? I reserve that for setting a mood) The necklace is very, very hard to see, esp. the cropped part. The candles...cropped and questionable, too. (You've heard this book isn't all that new, haven't you? joke) 5 Swash Addendum: Darkness - orange gold tablecloth, binding and candles are well lit. Book cover w/necklace chain (disappearing in the distance) seem to dark to capture the details of the chain. Cross cropped and out of focus.
Good lighting and good original idea...I think that you should maybe try it again minus the candles...they kind of distract from the bible. I love how the light brought out the cracks in the leather of the binding...very visual! Good job! -8
The idea and lighting are great, however the other objects seem to distract rather than enhance. Different cropping, showing more of the objects, might have been better---or leaving them out and letting the book stand alone.
