I had some time to kill while my fiancee was at a bridal shower for a friend in San Antonio, and so I wandered into this little nature park not far away and brought my camera in case I saw anything that struck me. There are two things that I find fascinating about this little cactus pictured here: (1) the beauty of this evergreen stood in stark contrast to everything else I could see in this park at this time of year, and most of my photos that day were of gnarled, decayed branches of wood against a cold, hard sky; and (2) this park is right smack dab in the middle of a housing development project, and so you can hear tons of construction noise throughout the park, yet this cactus seems almost quietly undisturbed by any of that. I was impressed by the patterning of its sheaves--as though in the midst of a time when all is dying around it (e.g., the fall and coming winter), it stands proud and seems rather to thrive.
