 This was the first day of strandings at Marsden Point, these were the 37 Pilot whales that passed away, they were burried a few hours later in the sand dunes.

That's a tragic story. There was a news article about similar strandings in Tasmania earlier this year or last year which suggested that sonar from a naval (possibly submarine) exercise causes damage to the whale's navigation system. I think other research has also concluded similar findings. It is a really dramatic photo.

These photos are dramatic, interesting, fascinating - but you need to put up a few words about where, why, and what in the "photographer's comments" section above. That way I will have even more appreciation - and might even learning something too ;-) The image above is so serious, in my opinion, that a desat job on the boy really is not necessary. It cheapens a very rich image.
