Probably Gertrude Steins most famous quote, often interpreted as "things are what they are".
I expect to see a lot of flowers in this challenges but with my lack of ability to get out and about these days I am sticking with what I know...although...I much prefer darker backgrounds they are so much easier to work with!!!

I'm not sure I'm crazy about the negative space simply as a photograph, but I can sure see this with some text - an invitation or something - with the rose acting as a bottom boreder. Very good detail and color in the rose. I do like the "clean" feel of the shot.
I agree with Rina on all accounts except her opinion of the negative space. I am a negative space junkie and I like how you used it here. Nice job! Almost looks like a painting.
:) explaining my weird comment:
this quote from Gertrude Stein has a special meaning to postmodernists. since I am very much into postmodern I have been thinking about this frase a lot.
postmodernists took that frase and "shifted" it's meaning from "the things are what they are" to "the things repete themselves endlessly and without any meaning". I just tried to use this second postmodern meaning and apply it to a photo (a photo in general, not this particular one).
:) sorry for a long comment but you asked to explain. I like the photo.
Wow... some of your comments are brutal!! Ok, here's my take: a) I can see perfectly that it is a yellow rose; b) I didn't mind the brightness and understood that it must have been your intention (light on white, duh); c) I liked the tight vertical crop, but; d) I thought there was just a smidge too much negative space.
Another shot I think is underrated. The voters are a funny bunch sometimes.
is it really? :) the rose as your subjuct has probably died already. the memory of that rose in your head is only a reflection of the real rose. and the rose on your photo is a reflection of the reflection in your head of that real rose. and how I see your photo...:) it's interesting, isn't it?
