 Bright but somewhat overcast day.

Converted to b&w during raw conversion, using the Elements 4 conversion.
Slight levels and contrst adjustment.
Some dodging and burning on both rocks and tree.

You exposed for the background which cost you highlights on the tree (your subject) and details in the shadows. Did you try bracketing your shot? If you shoot in Camera Raw you can make adjustments to your exposure.
