The British Sugar factory in York is closing at the end of this beet campaign. It has defined Autumn for York residents for many years - the billowing clouds are actually steam, not smoke, and have a vry distinctive autumnal smell. The closure of the factory will have a profound affect on the economy of York and the surrounding rural area. My aim was to try and show how closely the factory was connected to the lives of York residents, hence photographing it with the suburban houses in the foreground. I had to wait for a relatively clear night with a fullish moon in order to capture the right light reflected off the steam clouds; additionally I had to wait for the wind to be blowing in the right direction. I shot in raw, converting using DPP and selecting a colour temperature of 6,500. I did a little dodging and burning on the houses and resized in Elements 4.
Edit: Dead chuffed to get a top twenty finish on my second challenge entry - suspect it will be a long time before I repeat it, 'though....

Wow, really like the tall smoke stack (?) and the smoke trails. I would have loved to see the smoke stack the main point of focus as the foreground is distracting and takes away from the pic. Very nice though.
